No fewer than thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
