Colombian Leader Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' should United States Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Escalating Threats and Accusations

Speaking to the press over the weekend, Trump threatened analogous use of force against Bogotá, claiming Colombia is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure who likes making narcotics and selling it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally tied to the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia has long been a key ally of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters demobilised following a landmark accord.

The President's Strong Answer

When asked if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed decades ago, firmly denied these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he affirmed.

"He comments uninformed. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And should they arrest the president, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch a gun ... but for Colombia I shall resume the fight," he affirmed.

Increased Security along with Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices from across the ideological divide have condemned the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

American authorities cancelled Petro’s visa following he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and various close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its military presence in the region and bombing suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted attacks on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
