An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
